Justis requests European data for VOG assessment

Since 1 April 2019, screening authority Justis has been requesting judicial data from Belgium and Luxembourg in the event that citizens from those countries apply for a Certificate of Good Conduct (Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag, VOG) for the purposes of working in the Netherlands. Justis uses these data when assessing the VOG application. This procedure ensures that a more complete picture is formed of the integrity of staff from our neighbouring countries.

In addition, the Netherlands is keen to exchange judicial data with Germany. To this end, agreements will be made with Germany.

Working with children: data always exchanged

The Netherlands has been exchanging criminal records with all EU countries since 2013 in the event that an EU citizen applies for a VOG with the aim of working in the Netherlands with children or is being posted abroad by a Dutch organisation in order to work with children there. This process is to protects children from sexual abuse and sexual exploitation.

Data exchange through ECRIS

European data exchange is done through the European Criminal Record Information System (ECRIS). This system constitutes an electronic link between EU countries’ national criminal registers.
